A Fascinating Personal Account Of Theatrical Life In The Early 19th Century.Folio Size, It is titled on the spine in gilt SCRAP BOOK 3 1826 & 1827 and measures 17 inches by 10 1/2 inches. It's author John Stokes Bennett was an Actor and Playwright. He also designed & painted Stage Sets, this is reflected in the high quality drawings and watercolors, the hand coloring of the prints & the layout of the scrapbook. At the time of the Scrapbook he was the Manager Of The Theatre Royal Exeter. The scrapbook has 203 pages, It contains 18 Playbills, 31 Juvenile Dramas (Many by Hodgson's & Many Hand Colored), 20 Fine Drawings & Watercolors, 36 Engravings (Many Hand Colored), 4 Silhouettes & Many Reviews of Plays & Performances. The Frontispiece has a wonderful collage (See Image). Among the 18 Playbills are YATES REMINISCENCES ~ BENYOWSKY Or THE EXILES OF KAMSCHATKA RETURNED KILLED ~ THE PILOT OF THE STORM AT SEA ~ JANE SHORE ROBINSON CRUSOE or THE BUCANEERS ~ NELSONS GLORY MIRTH and MAGIC or HARLEQUINS FLIGHT TO THE MOON (See Image) ~ The last mentioned was written & performed by John Bennet. The Juvenile Dramas have scenes from FAUSTUS, BLUE BEARD, BRUTUS, THE FALLS OF CLYDE and THE VAMPIRE. There are 4 Silhouettes. 3 are of the 4 are of the 4 Bennett Family, they were put in the album at a later date (The original envelope in which they were stored is inside the album). There are many newspaper reviews of plays & performances. The Scapbook starts with an advert for The Theatre Royal Exeter Announcing It's Opening On 26th December 1826 With Mr Bennett Stating The Theatre has been newly Painted & Decorated. There then follow numerous press cuttings on the following (long & involved) story: The "Celebrated Harlequin" Mr Auld fell to his death on the theatre pit stairs just before a performance. An inquest was held A Verdict Of Accidental Death was given Mr Auld's Widow was given a Benefit Performance at The Theatre Royal. the final newspaper cutting on the subject is by the Theatre & Actors eloquently defending Mr Bennett from the charge that he had held back money from the widow from the very successful Benefit Performance. There are thearical reviews from London as well as Exeter. There are several cuttings in reference to Edmund Kean (Who was billed as "Mr Kean of Exeter". when he appeared in London in The Merchant Of Venice). Mr Bennet provided a list of chapters. Along with the the theatrical pieces there are also chapters dealing with the deaths of the Duke of York & the Prime Minister George Canning, Murder Trials, Medical Cures, Life In London, Life In Exeter & Comic Selections. The Scrapbook starts with a poem that contains the lines: Some humble leaf like this maybe the sole remaining trace of me" & ends with the lines " To Tell I Was - I Lived - I Died ! Condition :The front cover is detached. The paper is of a very high quality & the leaves are as clean & crisp as they were in the 1820's, there are still unused scraps in the leaves, some of the pages & a drawing (Not Included In The Count) have been cut down .Giving it the feel of a time capsule & the sensation of seeing how the it was all put together. Dating from the 1920's, this large and very heavy vase is very well painted with a scene of Seven Immortals among temples, mountains, clouds and trees. Most of the figures, mountains, trees and clouds are modelled in high reliefSigned on the base with the seal mark of Kinkozan
below which it says Made In Japan. It measures 14 3/4 inches high and has a width of 7 1/2 inches and weighs a mere 7 1/2 pounds (3.4 kilos). Unusually for 1920's Satsuma it has the aura of a Meiji Period piece. Aside from slight wear to the gilding it is in very good condition. The choice of shipping on this item is: Fedex, UPS, Royal Mail Airsure, Royal Mail Signed For or Royal Mail Special Delivery in the U.K. We accept: Visa, Mastercard & American Express.
